War from the Lawn Chair: Day Seven

7 minute read

Boredom. It all plagues most of us from time to time. Being unable to come up with quality things to do has been the undoing of several vampires in this city. Several have searched far and long for things to quell the boredom beast, and a good portion of the time, they have gotten themselves in trouble as a result. But what if a war is being waged based completely on boredom? What if a group was so tired of the normal day to day routine that they decided to go attack to alleviate it? Over the past few days, this excuse has indeed been referenced by at least one member of the House of Heorot. It doesn’t matter if there is victory or defeat, because the fighting is a purpose within itself.

When I personally sit back and do an observation of my own unlife, I can honestly say that I’ve hardly ever been struck by the boredom monster. I am a firm believer that a clan cannot have ideals if it cannot protect them. Because of this, I work hard night in and night out to ensure that the safety of my citizens is protected. When I’m not working, I’m speaking with friends, spending time with family, or tucked away with my wife ignoring the rest of you. Granted, I do have a natural pull towards fighting and because of this, if someone decides to make themselves a target, I’ll bring it. But I do not build and work as hard as I do to place the lives of my citizens or the members of my allied clans in jeopardy because of boredom. I have better things to do than to destroy all of the hard work I’ve done on a whim.

Is boredom the true answer or is it a cover because the war did not exactly go the manner in which the aggressors imagined? I suppose the answer could shift to either side depending on who you ask. Members of the AoF will probably claim the latter while the aggressors themselves may hang to the former. After starting a war, going down 14 kills to 3 in the first week, and having the kills pile up while members were too busy defending themselves to an uninvolved Assistant Editor, the aggressors not only have to contend with being outgunned by a smaller group, but they have to contend with the shot to their public image as well. The next claim, of course, is that there is no caring for said public image.

Well spoken Ophelia, such is the way of Bushido.

I apologize for the late reply. I was caught up in… other matters. :P I am honoured by your words and I have no doubt that you know I hold you in high regard as well. As far as my clan leaders are concerned, we may not always agree on all the issues but even then they have encouraged me to speak out, so I hope that answers your question.

CBK

May you rise stronger after your rest, and just as blood-thirsty. Over the past few days I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you, and your enthusiasm and love of battle has impressed me. In the end, coins and blood come and go, yet what you make it of it remains. In the past three years, the House of Heorot has been in more large wars than any other existing clan in this city. Many of us have died at the hands of the former Dark Alliance (as some of you would know :P), yet we came back from it far stronger than we have ever been. There are very few vampires and clans in this city that are not afraid to lose it all. The trick is knowing that everything lost in the battle can be regained, as long as the spirit remains. This is something I see in all of you and it makes me content.

To quote this from what you said:

“But I do not build and work as hard as I do to place the lives of my citizens or the members of my allied clans in jeopardy because of boredom. I have better things to do than to destroy all of the hard work I’ve done on a whim.”

And that’s the disconnect here. I induct everyone of my Sword-Thanes with the words that blood and coin mean nothing. They come, they go, that is the way of things. It is the connections between us and the absolute trust and love of battle that has been built successfully, and which cannot be destroyed.

So, perhaps you are seeing blood or coin as the end goal or objects most desired. I and mine definitely do not.

Blood and Coin are a vehicle to reach the goal. Not the goal itself. Applauds AQD, very nicely put M’Lady.

Uhh, I never said that blood or coin is the end result. What I SAID was that I would not go off half cocked and blow it all due to being bored. I build for the ultimate protection of my citizens. If a noble cause (read: not boredom) comes along, then yes, it will be time to utilize the supplies that I have labored over building.

I said nothing about not having connections, trust, or love of battle. In fact, I admitted that I do indeed love battle and I believe my bloodline can attest to the rest.

So, allow me to rephrase myself. If what one of your members is claiming is true, that this war was started as the result of boredom, then it was one of the dumbest displays of boredom I’ve seen in awhile. Why? Because you started a war and you’re getting your ass handed to you. Woohoo, you’re no longer bored. You’ll be even less bored when you’re dead. Good luck with that, by the way.

And to you, sir, I’d like to applaud your toadying. You are a true brown-nosed sycophant!

Ravana seems to think I am trying to influence you with flattery, thanks for the giggle. I rarely have time anymore for comments on this one sided publication but I did need the laugh. Thanks

I think he just doesn’t understand that two people could agree–with no other motivations but to agree. Makes me wonder what sort of argumentative place he grew up in ;P

You have a strange habit of changing the meaning of the words you say after you say them.

Ravana

One does not have to be argumentative to observe it in others. However, I am curious about where you might think I was brought up. It’s so long ago even I struggle to remember ;)

I strip of all my shame today, and I dare to declare publicly, CBK, that I like you, man… Not all of the time, OK, but in general, yes. LOL. Now I dare you… to whatever you want. Oh, and I also like Japanese people. They seem to be pretty intelligent, and tend to use very few words to say a lot. In spite of what many vampires here do (Guess most are from Occident :P) I like Japanese, I like them better if they’re Type 0 Negative. “The Ways of the Warrior” I tend to remember that line (and, I swear, I have never read any Japanese book. Weird.)

Seyda

Well, I feel that my words have been more than clear and since I’m not versed in the teaching of reading comprehension, I guess there’s nothing more to be said here.

ophelia

The way of the warror is to embrace their duties, even if there is a conflict between ‘master’ and family. As warriors we are bound by our loyalty to our word, no matter the cost to family. The ‘master’ in this case being the side you have chosen to fight on. And a REAL warrior would recognise this

Additionally…the way of the warrior was not to fear death but to embrace it. It is said that a true warrior would face death at the hands of self or of family before dishonor at the hands of the enemy.

In light of previous comments about family attacking family…as well as taking one’s life in war or falling on your brothers sword..there you go.

Guess seeing a reply from my admired :P CBK here would be too much for me to ask? Silly me…

evilive

…it was not well seen among his Clan’s leaders that he could praise a former enemy back? (before he was executed of course) :P Wonders wonders, unanswered wonders…
